Last Year's Blues

Last night I watched as darkness crept into my room.
You look nervous it's almost high noon.
Don't be worried it will all be over soon.
There's something out there and it's howling at the moon.

I've got one hand slipping and the other is gone.
I've got a sinking feeling because I can't hold on.
I'm not that worried I know it happens to everyone someday.
I just never thought it was going to be this way.

She looked at my hands. She looked at my feet.
She said you look hungry. I said well I've had nothing to eat
She said this made her sad but I doubt that that is true,
Because every time I looked at her, she was looking back at you.
I looked at her smile and I looked at her hair.
I said rather sarcastically well it's nice to know you care.
She said I don't really care that much. I was only being polite.
I was hurt by her honesty but I didn't want a fight.

I can tell by your face that you don't love me anymore.
So if you need me I'll be standing over by the door.
Not making eye contact staring directly at the floor.
Never expecting, but secretly hoping for more.

Now my hands are bleeding and my face is bruised.
I got a sinking feeling and I'm feeling used.
The other guy is worse and he ain't amused
I'm the super-grass and he's the accused.

She looked at my hands. She looked at my feet.
She said you look tired. I said well I never go to sleep.

I got a long way to walk through the wind and the rain.
Everything is different yet it's strangely the same.
Everyone around me is just playing the same old game.
I'm running out of people except myself to blame.

The gathering storm has entered my mind.
You've been wasting your life and I've been wasting my time
I stumbled at the start of the race and now I'm so far behind.
So if you need me, I'll be walking down the line.

I was hurt by her honesty but I didn't want a fight
